New Features and I want Feedback

Postby Slayer » Sun Sep 17, 2006 7:19 am

Over the last few weeks i have been adding Updating and Patching tons of stuff on the site. Here are a few things i want some feedback on.

- The New BoxOver on Forum topics.
- The New Recent Posts Block on the Homepage.
- The New User-Info Block
- The Admin Login Block
- The New Gallery Version 2
- Anything else you want to comment on.

Showing an employer this website would probably get you hired instantly, but to me its just a lot of useless fluff.

I dont mind it at all, and some of the stuff is cool, but I dont really use it. I check the mainpage, shoutbox, then look for any new topics/replys in the scrolling forums RSS thing.

i like the scrolling rss box, and the user info, but i think the forums box with the show/hide button should be modified to show the last 5 posts and have the show/hide button serve to show the last 50 or so.

I will look into that possibility. That Block is still pretty early in development at ravenphpscripts.com so hopefully i can get that working.

Thanks to both of you for stepping up to post.

Most of the stuff doesnt affect me because as Jink said it is a lot of fluff. The thing that really affects me is the new recent post block, the old one was so much better. I could give two shits who the top posters were and most everyone already knew who they were anyway, and the show/hide thing is just annoying in my opinion. I also think the admin login should be moved to the bottom, you want the Site Navigation to be the easiest thing to find. Plus 99% of the people visiting the site will never have to use that feature. Sorry if I seem harsh.

EDIT: Just noticed the thread preview when you rollover a topic, not sure if I care for that either.

P.S. I am a minimalist when it comes to design, less is more.

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it. If nobody tells me what they like and dont like i cant make changes to make their experience better.

- Recent Posts
If i was able to get the new recent posts center block to show the last 5 posts would that satisfy you. I think the show hide for the latest 25 is a good way to find out what been happening in the forums if you were away from Slayfest for a few days. I think only showing the last 5 is good for the more frequent visitors but it doesent but as soon a more than 5 topics are active in a single day then people lose track of what was posted before that. So what im tryin to do is find the sweet spot where both of those needs can be met.

- BoxOver forum topics
I kinda installed this mod on impulse. I thought it was a really cool effect that would help users browse the forums. I think if mostly for the dial up users. Loading 15 seperate forum topics must be a pain. If people dont take to it or if it gets annoying i will remove it. consider this a trial period.

- Admin login block
I know making it the top block on the left was a bit extreme but WOW does it make my life easier. After im logged in it adds an ADmin DHTML menu that really speeds up my productivity. I will move the block around until i find a good place but I wont interfere with were the navigation is.

What about on the right hand side?

EDIT: Or do you need it while viewing threads?

It would be nice if i could do that but many of the moudles including the forums dont have right side blocks. I moved the admin login to just above the user info block. Any thoughts?

I changed the permissions on the blockto administrators only so none of you average users can see it.
