Processor Kaput? & Raid 0 File Recovery

Postby Pestilence » Mon Jan 05, 2009 4:36 pm

My computer crapped out on me again.
I'm pritty sure it's the processor, one of the RAM sticks overheats too though. Those are the only original parts still in there >:(
I'd like to make sure it's actualy the Processor before I shell out $ I don't have on a new one. When I turn it on, it doesnt give me the startup beep. All the other parts are getting power, even the mouse and roms so I don't think it's the new MoBo. I even swapped out the battery for the BIOS to be sure just cuz I had another one. The Monitor doesnt get signal and the system doesnt chirp it's "I'm working" beep. I imagine I can't get a signal to the monitor cuz it's plugged into the GPU. The only onboard vid outs are HD and SP whatevers that I dont have cables or current TVs for to check. It had afew problems before where I'd half to start her up afew times before it would work but I figured it was a software issue and ignored it as I was waiting for an External HD to backup everything on.
Speaking of that, I had all my goodies on my RAID 0 array... how would one go about recovering the files from that now that it is no longer defined on the system? I could easily pull files off a non-array drive but can I reinit the array without wipeing it or pull the data via norton ghost or something like it or is all of that data dead?

SO... does that sound like a cooked Processor and is there any hope for my data?

We should be able to save the data. Just dont define any new raid array's or reformat or anything. Leave the HDD's alone.

This problem sounds like something I would want to check on in person. Is there a chance you could bring it out this weekend or something.

I'll see if I can't talk the ol' lady into takeing off my leash for the weekend. Is there a lan planned?

I did plug all my crap into my old motherboard (Foxxcon 590i) that beeped repeatedly at me. I didnt write down the code it gave me on it's onboard bug display (1C I think) because I didnt have the internet at home or the time on the internet at work to explore the meaning of the code properly.

That sounds like a RAM issue. Try swapping in one stick at a time on the old motherboard and see if you can get it to post.

I ran with either stick alone and tried swapping it's position on the MoBo to no effect. Unless both decided to die completely at the same time, it's more then just a RAM issue. One of the RAM sticks seems to be overheating abit and I was running on just the good one for abit. That seemed to save me alot of blue screen glitches.
Anyone have a spare AM2 processor over there or perhapse an extra gameing CPU on site to prevent me from driveing all the way out there only to verify that I need a new part and drive home without satisfying my L4D Fix?

Everything that I've got extra processor-wise is Intel, sorry. I do have a couple extra PCI and PCI-e video cards though. And you're welcome to borrow a stick of RAM from my PC to test if you're going to be at the mini-LAN saturday.

On a similar, yet completely unrelated note; I'm reformatting my desktop right now... a bad defrag killed my filesystem... *sigh* I <3 u Microsoft.

Thanks, I havent been able to play for quite awhile yet I half to hear Peashooter talking about it all day at work :(. Assumeing we need my steam account to both play, can you be trusted with my steam account and password (I think it'll want to download the whole damned game unless it can be copied over). If so you can use it for the month or two untill I get my taxes back and get my cable back to check out any of the many games on it if your interested.

It will not download a copy of the game if the game is installed along with steam. It will simply unlock it for you account. Takes about 30 seconds.

I do this all the time so my youngest son can play CSS and stuff.

All you need is your login. The game is already installed and works fine. If you don't trust me with your account then just don't save the password. I think im good for games for the moment but I'll have a look.

RESOLVED:
Both RAM sticks were toast. Thanks to Cobret's help for tracking down the problem and for the use of his RAM stick (get your mind out of the gutter) so I could use my own computer for the nights gameing.
All information on my RAID array was recovered intact.
