Think that thing is compatible with my mb? I found it for sale for $24 at

http://www.heatsinkfactory.com/thermalr ... ooler.html

but my mboard is not on their compatibility list.

I am 90% sure that it is compatible. Looking at a top-view pic of your motherboard, here

It looks like it has the same mounting pins for the NB sink that my motherboard does, shown here

The compatability lists for the HR-05IFX show 780G and 790FX chipsets from Gigabyte, and I'm pretty sure that all of AMD's 700-series chipsets use the same mounting methods.

It looks like it will fit just fine. If you don't have any AS5 I would order some along with that HS, you'll need it. The TC that comes with it isn't the greatest.

Getting an 80mm fan (the fan clips on that HS only work with 15mm thick fans) might be a good option too, just to go ahead with some cooling overkill. Newegg sells 80x15 fans for relatively cheap, but I don't know about that site you found it at. That price looks good too, I think I paid 32.99 for mine on Amazon.

Ok here it is.....sorry to say I am not impressed.

The temp droped 1 whole degree C

And it was a damn tight fit. I had to take one of the mounting clips off of the first memory slot. The fan guard is touching the heat pipes on my cpu heatsink and the wire fan holders are touching the heat spreader on the first memory stick. Also I had to make it sit slightly crooked in order to get just that much.

Not to mention it was a pain in the ass to install and can be easily wiggled with the touch of a finger.

The installation woes make sense, it was a bitch for me to squeeze it between a Tuniq 120 and a GTX260, and mine wiggles also.

Beyond asking if you used any TIM and if you used it correctly (which I am more than certain you did) I haven't the slightest idea what that 80C temp could be. If it is not the VGA, CPU, or NB.

RAM sticks do not have temp probes, and if your hard drive was that hot it would have failed by now. At very least now you know that your northbridge is sufficiently cooled and that you have some decent overclocking headroom under that massive 'sink.

Ok the fan I bought for that NB heatsink was tinking against the HS so I broke down the entire computer and re applied everything. I rigged up my own mount for that HS using a couple of elongated motherboard mountiing screws i don't know what they are called and some tiny nuts i had in the garage. The HS is on much firmer now, no waggling, and it actually droped the temp another 3 whole degrees. Might be even better but when I got it all back together and powered it up that fan decided to die outright. That was a Silenx fan, I am going to try a Zalman this time.
